Social Dynamics and
Communication Skills
For those who don’t know what the term “social dynamics” means, Merriam-Webster defines it as “a branch of social physics that deals with the laws, forces, and phenomena of change in society.” When I saw physics, I immediately stepped back. What does this even mean? I remember reading this and thinking to myself, “Hmm, that is not what I thought this term literally meant.” After much research, I came up with my own definition of social dynamics, which is this: The changes in interaction and social behavior of a society that can occur within an individual or group setting that demands change in the ways we communicate for that moment in time.
The key point to take away from this topic is that it is truly a dynamic, meaning it’s active and changes with the environment that we place ourselves in. For example, I will act differently when I am out hanging out with my friends on a Saturday night compared to how I would act with my parents and their friends on a Saturday night. These are two completely different groups of individuals that I would have to change my communication skills for depending on the situation. Discovering how to talk with them, how to act, and what is appropriate is all part of the social dynamic discovery process. When communicating with others, you do not want to offend them or make them uncomfortable just because you can’t direct your behaviors or interaction in a manner that is respectful and acceptable in that particular setting.
Communication is a medium through which we share knowledge, ideas or thoughts with others. In today’s era, it is highly imperative for all of us to have good communication skills. With an effective communication skill, we can interact with a large number of people based globally. It is the most ideal medium of transferring information from one place to another. It can be done verbally, visually or in written form. Needless to say, verbal communication means you have to use your voice so as to educate or inform others. Besides, using books, magazine, websites (blog and articles), you can convey the information in a non-verbal manner to the masses. In addition to this, through catchy ads, logos, charts and maps, you can capture the attention of the onlookers. In simple words, you can visually communicate with them.
In order to maintain the social dynamics of the society, an individual needs to be a good communicator. Regular interaction with other people can help in identifying the things happening around the world or within the society. It has been seen that the people who have better listening ability will also have a better communication skills. Hence, it is important to be a good listener so as to become a good communicator. Listening is one of the aspects of developing the communication skills. The primarily objective communication is to increase the use of language in a natural environment.
Children develop communication skills in natural surroundings. For instance, by making an eye contact with their parents or by listening to their words or recognizing the faces of their siblings, they slowly develop an interpersonal relationship. Based on the experiences, children learn communication, interpersonal and social skills. Hence, it is important to inculcate these skills in them in order to make them more socialized, attentive and alert about the changes happening within their surroundings. Moreover, a better communication skill will also allow them to understand the ideas of different people and different disciplines including economics and sociology.
